Cottbus - The average age of doctors in Brandenburg has continued to rise. About 38 percent of working doctors are more than 50 years old. 24 percent of medical professionals in the state are now retired. This is the result of statistics from (LÄKB) from February 2009. Of the 11,235 doctors who were registered with the chamber last year, 2,677 were no longer in professional life. In 2007 the proportion was 23 percent. “The average age of medical professionals in Brandenburg is increasing rapidly. Likewise, more and more people are retiring. But who should close the gaps if we cannot bring the youngsters to us, ”asked Chamber President Udo Wolter. The current figures also show that the hospitals in Brandenburg employed around 100 more assistant doctors in 2008 than in 2007, namely total of 3,043. “I see this as positive signal that the clinics have recognized the signs of the times and are giving young colleagues chance for further training. After all, we are dependent on well-trained young people in the outpatient and inpatient sectors, ”said the Chamber President.
