For the first time, the German Impact Journal published few weeks ago Factor received. It is 1.099. This puts Deutsches Ärzteblatt in the middle of the 133 international general medical journals that Thomson Reuters, the publisher of the impact factor, has put together in the “Medicine, General and Internal” category - good start.
In the strict sense of the word, the impact factor was not assigned to the German Medical Journal, but to the online journal Deutsches Ärzteblatt International, in which all the articles in the Medicine section appear in full English translation, i.e. all by ours Peer-reviewed scientific papers. Deutsches Ärzteblatt founded this branch in 2008 to achieve indexing in the most important medical databases, such as Medline or Thomson Reuters. That was not an end in itself. Rather, it was done in order to be able to present our readers with even better scientific articles: Without being represented in these databases, it is now difficult to attract good authors, because the scientists are under the pressure of constant evaluations, the main instrument of which is the impact factor is. This type of evaluation and the impact factor are controversial (-). As scientist and also as the editor of journal, however, one cannot ignore him, this supposedly simple number seems so popular and tempting for the research bureaucracy.
We are therefore happy to be able to offer our authors the impact factor in addition to the enormous reach of Deutsches Ärzteblatt - its actual "impact" - in addition to the bilingualism and visibility in Medline.
Deutsches Ärzteblatt International is new magazine that is unusual in its bilingualism, which is why the impact factor now at hand is also unusual: As with other new magazines, the first year is 1-year impact Factor in which the citations do not refer to two journal years, as usual, but to one (). In addition, due to problems with bilingualism, at least 69.6 percent () of all citations of scientific articles from Deutsches Ärzteblatt International in other specialist journals were not taken into account, which - together with the enormously high number of letters from readers, which we compare to other periodicals delight - has led to non-representative bias in the proportion of self-citations.
