Berlin - When it comes to further training, contract doctors and psychotherapists are extremely exemplary. Around 98 percent comply with their training obligation on time, as evaluations by the KBV show.
"The high rate shows that it is matter of course for doctors and psychotherapists to continue their training," emphasized KBV Chairman Andreas Gassen. He pointed out that knowledge in medicine doubles about every five years. "If we were to carry out some treatments today as we learned in training, the patients could rightly accuse us of incorrect treatment."

Contract doctors and psychotherapists are obliged, in accordance with the professional regulations and the social law, to continue to train themselves in order to ensure the further development of their professional competence. Since 2004, they have had to prove this every five years and provide proof of at least 250 advanced training points to their statutory health insurance association. As rule, this is done by means of certificate from the competent chamber of doctors or psychotherapists.
For doctors and psychotherapists who were admitted before June 30, 2004, the verification period ended year ago for the second time. By June 30, 2014, 93,206 doctors and psychotherapists nationwide had been asked to document the required number of points. 91,410 and thus around 98 percent of them fulfilled their training obligation on time!
