Berlin - Around 8,000 lawsuits are pending in the USA against the seed manufacturer Monsanto because of the herbicide glyphosate. Bayer CEO Werner Baumann named this number as of the end of July in conference call yesterday after there had been talk of around 5,000 lawsuits.
The chemical company recently had Monsanto for around 63 billion dollars (a good 54 billion euros ), the US company is currently being integrated into the German one. Bayer will vigorously defend the herbicide glyphosate and related products, said Bayer CEO Baumann.
Monsanto was recently fined $ 290 million in California to pay cancer patient who attributed his illness to the use of Monsanto products containing glyphosate. Whether the chemical actually causes cancer is matter of dispute among experts.
