Hamburg - The issue of euthanasia will continue to occupy the new federal government: 68 patients had submitted an application to the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArm) to purchase lethal drug, reported Der Spiegel.
The applicants claim that the terminally ill are entitled to substance to kill themselves in exceptional cases. In the justification of the Leipzig judges it was stated that "the acquisition of narcotic drug for suicide is exceptionally compatible with the purpose of the law if the suicidal acquirer is in an extreme emergency because of serious and incurable illness".

In politics, with doctors and patient advocates, the judgment of the judge met with criticism. Federal Health Minister Hermann Gröhe (CDU) had announced that he wanted to prevent “the breaking of taboos on state aid to suicide”. The ministry wants to wait for an opinion first, which the constitutional expert Udo Di Fabio creates on behalf of the BfArm. The federal institute subordinate to Gröhe also stated that it would not decide beforehand on the motions because of the “special scope of the judgment”.
It was not until 2015 that the Bundestag decided to tighten the applicable law to make euthanasia criminal offense .
