Valletta - 65 migrants rescued from distress at sea tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in Malta. The country's Ministry of Health announced yesterday. The people belong to larger group that was taken in the Mediterranean Sea the day before yesterday and brought to Malta.
A total of 94 boat refugees were brought ashore by the Maltese military after their boat leaked. The smaller part of the group had negative test results, some evaluations were still pending yesterday.
All boat migrants in that small EU countries are automatically quarantined and tested for the coronavirus. The positive cases were isolated in the reception facility. They are being watched, the Ministry of Health in the capital Valletta said.
The migrant group had an unusually high number of positive tests. In the small Mediterranean country with around 500,000 inhabitants, the authorities previously recorded very few cases. Migrants from North Africa who were infected with the corona virus had also recently arrived in Italy. Overall, their number has remained very low so far.
