Wiesbaden - The number of heart operations in Germany rose to 373,837 in the past year. That reports today. This means that the number of heart operations has increased by 3.4 percent compared to 2010. Heart patients were on average 70 years old, almost two thirds (63.4 percent) were men.
Doctors most often implanted pacemaker and defibrillator - they performed around 118,000 surgical interventions for this purpose. In second place were operations in which they created bypass (82,000 interventions), in third place operations in connection with pacemaker and defibrillator (53,000 interventions).
According to further information from the Federal Statistical Office, the number of interventions on the heart reached new high in 2011. In 2010 it was 361,649, in 2005 there were 311,963 operations on the heart in Germany.
Minimally invasive operations on the heart valves experienced boom: In 2006, these were included in the statistics for the first time with 73 operations, in 2011 the Federal Office counted 9,228 minimally invasive heart valve operations.
