3-D ultrasound of the liver: a detailed representation

3-D representation using sonography is widely used in gynecology spread. The contrast at the transition from liquid medium (amniotic fluid) to solid medium (fetus) enables detailed, high-contrast images of the unborn child to be created. This method has not yet been used for liver sonography. Using this method, we created 3-D sonographic image in patient with cirrhosis of the liver and superficial hepatocellular carcinoma (30 × 27 mm), surrounded by ascites (figure) . This technology makes it possible to use liver ultrasound to create new, detailed representations of superficial tumors and to clearly depict the uneven structure of the cirrhosis liver. Detailed 3-D sonographic images of the liver can be generated without special ultrasound probes or contrast agent administration. It is still unclear whether this will lead to further medical applicability in the future or whether this will only help to illustrate cirrhosis of the liver.
