In 2.5 percent of twelve to 25 year olds in Germany there is such excessive use of internet and computer games. There are no differences between the sexes. Excessive use means that people can no longer control the time they spend on the Internet or that they become anxious or irritable if they cannot be online.
The other results show that 97.7 percent of those surveyed had used the Internet in the twelve months before the survey. For both genders, the focus is on communication offers such as emails or social networks, information sites such as Wikipedia, Google or news and entertainment such as music and video downloads.
Computer games are also popular with adolescents and young adults: 53.9 percent state that they play online and 76.4 percent play offline, for example via game consoles. Male respondents use computer games around three times as long as female respondents.
"To prevent young people from developing addiction-like behavior in the first place, it is important to reach them early and encourage them to use the Internet in critical and responsible manner" said Pott.
