Berlin - The (MDC) Berlin Book celebrated its 20th anniversary on Friday. "With the fall of the Berlin Wall, an institution emerged that has achieved the highest level of international recognition," said Federal Research Minister Annette Schavan (CDU). The next step is to ensure that scientific findings benefit patients even faster. This is what the future collaboration between the MDC and the im, said the minister.
Walter Rosenthal, Chairman of the Board and Scientific Board of Directors of the MDC, pointed out in his speech that the MDC was founded 20 years ago to conduct basic and clinical research Linking research together. “I see the translation of results from basic research into clinical application as one of the greatest challenges of our joint work with the Charité,” he said.
From 2013, there will be “unique opportunity”, long-term collaboration of the MDC and Charité with the Berlin Institute for Health Research on new substantive and structural basis. He then pointed out that according to the Thomson Reuters ranking, the MDC was ranked 14th among the world's top 20 research institutions in the field of molecular biology and genetics.
The MDC was founded in January 1992 on the recommendation of the Science Council. It is one of 18 research institutions in the Helmholtz Association. Around 1,600 employees including 495 guests from total of 57 countries work at the MDC.
"20 years of the MDC are stroke of luck for the State of Berlin," said the Berlin Senator for Economics, Technology and Research, Cornelia Yzer.
