Compared to other professional groups in the health care sector there are so far few organized and not self-managed. The German Nursing Council wants to change that.

It was something special anyway - it was the 1st German Care Day that ever took place. But it also became special because of the mood that was in the air: spirit of optimism. “There has been an immense change in the professional group. She is aware of her worth. She is willing and able to manage herself, ”said the President of the German Care Council, Andreas Westerfellhaus, to the 1,500 visitors to the Care Day on January 23 in Berlin. “Our offer to politicians is to help shape it constructively. Because never again can we leave the further development of our job description to others. ”
Union and SPD have each other in their coalition agreement agreed on long-term care reform, with which both new definition of the need for long-term care should be implemented and around six billion euros more should be added to the system. “It is not enough to think about what care reform might look like and how much money you need for it,” stressed Westerfellhaus. “If in the end you don't have the service providers who guarantee these services, any reform will fizzle out. First and foremost, the caregivers expected more colleagues so that they could provide the people with the services they had started to perform. “And we have to get away from minute maintenance,” said Westerfellhaus. "Because minute care makes you sick."
Together with the AOK Federal Association and the German Association of Towns and Municipalities, the Care Council has drawn up position paper. In it, the associations call for structures that enable people to live independently at home for as long as possible. This included advice and service structures close to home as well as alternatives to home care such as shared apartments, intergenerational living, small inpatient facilities, assisted living and sensible technical support systems.
The attractiveness of the care profession should also be increased by further developing the tasks of professional nursing staff , "Especially by improving the framework conditions for the implementation of the model projects for the transfer of medicine". These are suitable means of improving the cooperation between the professions in the health care system and thus also the job satisfaction of those involved and of absorbing supply bottlenecks.

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) originally announced that she would speak at the 1st German Care Day in order to highlight the political importance of the topic. After her pelvic injury, she was represented by Federal Health Minister Hermann Gröhe (CDU), who took the outstretched hand of Westerfellhaus ’. "I am happy to accept your offer to work together," said Gröhe. “Because we need the ideas of people caring for their jobs in all areas of care.” The federal government will make care clear focus of its work. "During this legislative period I will do all I can to improve our care professions," the minister promised. "Because we can no longer afford to leave this area." Numerous projects in the care sector are set out in the coalition agreement. A few others named Gröhe on January 27, the "Rheinische Post": It is planned to increase the number of trainees in geriatric care by 2015 by 30 percent. 4,000 nursing assistants are to be trained as specialists.
