Rome - 180 migrants rescued from distress at sea are waiting on the private rescue ship "Ocean Viking" to enter port in Italy or Malta.
After four relief operations in the Mediterranean, the organization SOS Méditerranée has arrived in both countries Verena Papke from the international group of operators has already unsuccessfully requested safe harbor for the rescued five times. The people were rescued last Thursday and the day before yesterday.
"Several desperate people have already said they want to jump overboard because they can no longer stand the tension of waiting, ”Papke described the situation in message.
The people come from 13 nations. Because of the pandemic, the "Ocean Viking" had lain in port in Marseille in France for long time. The ship has been in operation again since June 22nd.
Italy and Malta had declared themselves unsafe havens in the pandemic. Nevertheless, migrants from Libya and Tunisia leave for Europe again and again.
Italy and Malta have taken in migrants from private ships again in the past few weeks, but the countries often hesitate for long time before assigning ports. They regularly ask other EU states to commit to the redistribution of the new arrivals.
