Berlin - According to the Robert Koch Institute (), the health authorities in Germany reported 1,571 new infections with SARS-CoV-2 early this morning within one day. The day before it was 1,507. Last Saturday, with 2,034 new cases, the 2000 mark was exceeded for the first time since the end of April.
The peak of the daily reported new infections was more than 6,000 at the end of March / beginning of April. The number had tended to fall after the values still exceeded 1,000 in May, and has been increasing again since the end of July.
Experts are concerned that there could be sharp increase in the number of cases that would push the health authorities to their limits when it comes to tracking chains of infection.
At least 239,507 people have been in Germany has been proven to be infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, as the RKI reported on the Internet this morning (data as of August 28, 12.00 a.m.).

The number of reproductions, or R value for short, was 0.83 according to RKI estimates in Germany according to yesterday's announcement (previous day: 0.85). This means that one infected person infects slightly less than another person on average. The R-value shows the incidence of infection about one and half weeks beforehand.
In addition, the RKI gives so-called seven-day R in its current situation report. The value relates to longer period and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates from the day before yesterday, this value was 0.94 (previous day: 0.93). It shows the infection process from eight to 16 days ago.
