Mönchengladbach - A 15-year-old schoolboy died in Mönchengladbach from meningitis caused by meningococci. The city is now looking for everyone who had contact with the young person in the past ten days and who could have been infected. The student had attended the 9th grade of secondary school. Rapid antibiotic intake is recommended as preventative measure, it said. A meningococcal infection can become life-threatening within few hours.

In Mönchengladbach two cases of infection have been known this year, last year it was one. According to the Robert Koch Institute, 338 severe meningococcal infections were registered nationwide last year, in which 24 people died.
