Berlin - The Federal Ministry of Education and Research () supports detailed research into GDR history and SED injustice. 14 research associations will receive total of around 40 million euros for this.
Federal Research Minister Anja Karliczek (CDU) said: “Many people in our country have little knowledge about the GDR.” Knowledge gaps should be closed. "Because for free and democratic societies it is crucial to know one's own past and to question it critically," said the minister. The research results should be carried into society, memorials and other actors should be included in the associations.
The focus of the investigations is the aftermath of the GDR and its end to this day and so-called modernization blockades in politics, science, economy and society GDR. Some associations are dedicated to topics from the health sector.
A network coordinated by the Mainz University Medical Center is dedicated to this Topic "GDR past and mental health: risk and protective factors".
A network is dedicated to the topic of “people with disabilities in the GDR”. It is coordinated by the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel.
A network coordinated by the Jena University Hospital deals with "Soul work in socialism - the ambivalent role of psychology, psychiatry and psychotherapy in the health system of the GDR".
A network led by the University of Leipzig is investigating the topic of “sexual violence”.
The start of the projects is planned for autumn 2018. The ministry will fund total of 32 universities.
