Cologne - There are currently around 920,000 refugees in the Ukraine, 136,000 of them children. “The winter made the situation of the refugee families even worse. Thousands of families are exposed to the cold almost without protection, ”warned the children's aid organization.
But families who still live in their houses in the east of the country are also at risk, according to the aid organization: In eastern Ukraine, the regions were around Donetsk and Luhansk destroyed water supplies for around 750,000 people. Inadequate vaccination protection and insufficient supply of medication would put children in the affected areas at additional risk. In this way, around 1.7 million children in the country are affected by the conflict.
Unicef has more with local partners in Donetsk supplied more than 50,000 people with clean drinking water and distributed more than 7,000 hygiene sets to families. In addition, the relief organization is currently delivering protective tarpaulins for emergency shelters in the city of Dnipropetrovsk.
"Around 100,000 girls and boys in eastern Ukraine are dependent on psychosocial help due to the ongoing war situation," explained Rüdiger Luchmann, Deputy Head of Unicef Ukraine.
