Berlin - The debate about overcrowded waiting rooms in the emergency rooms of the hospitals is not ebbing these days. One reason why patients go to the clinics is ignorance. The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) therefore points out telephone help again after five years on the on-call number 116117.
The number is valid nationwide, works without an area code and can be dialed fixed or mobile. This means that patients can reach the medical on-call service - even at night, on weekends and on public holidays. "116117 is exactly the right place to go for acute, but not life-threatening complaints - outside of the practice hours," said KBV CEO Andreas Gassen.
He announced that he wanted to make the number even better known. This is the aim of advertising campaigns such as large-format posters or radio spots that will be placed in the course of this year as part of the “We like to work for your life” campaign. In addition, there will be nationwide outpatient on-call service day on October 11th. "If even more citizens know the medical on-call service of the statutory health insurance associations and the on-call number 116117, they will know that they do not have to go to the hospital emergency rooms in all cases," explained Gassen. According to, more than 6.2 million callers have used the 116117 in the past five years.
The on-call service should not be confused with the ambulance service, which provides help in life-threatening cases. In emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes and serious accidents, it is always important to dial the emergency number 112, according to the KBV. The uniform number 116117 for the medical on-call service will refer patients to doctor on duty or an open on-call practice as quickly as possible outside of the practice's opening hours. Patients who are no longer mobile receive house calls.
The Brandenburg Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians also draws positive balance (). According to the KV, more than 700,000 calls have been received there in the past five years. "The 116117 is real success story that began in Brandenburg," said KVBB chairman Peter Noack. In the past, there were countless different phone numbers nationwide through which the medical on-call service had to be contacted.
