Berlin - Representatives of the Federal Representation of Medical Students in Germany () today handed over petition with 108,654 supporters for fair practical year (PY) in medical studies.
“We demand fair conditions in the PY. We are not free station helpers. Blood draws and physical examinations alone are not enough to prepare for medical activity, ”said Eric Twomey, initiator of the petition and head of the PJ campaign, to the decision-makers at universities and university hospitals.
Nationwide surveys by the bvmd showed that up to 40 percent of medical students would have to fall back on their savings in their final year. Around 28 percent are dependent on part-time jobs in addition to the emotionally and physically demanding full-time work at the bedside.
The petition launched on December 6, 2018 was the starting signal for campaign to improve the PJ. A highlight was nationwide day of action for fair PJ on January 16, 2019. In this context, student representatives, medical faculties, universities and departments across Germany called for demonstrations, information and discussion events.
Specifically, the students request Expense allowance for all PJ students in the amount of the maximum BAföG rate. Students older than 25 years should also receive their health insurance contribution.

At least four hours of lectures and at least eight hours of self-study per week are also necessary. In addition, the students demand their own work clothes and their own storage space for clothes and personal items as well as access to the patient management system.
The bvmd also criticizes regulations for days off during the PY: If students split term of the PY between two universities - they completed them So, for example, your Tertial Internal Medicine two months in Munich and two months in Cologne - then in most federal states you shouldn't be absent in either part of the two parts for day, for example because of illness - and the fulcrum of medical studies, ”emphasized Peter Jan Chabiera, President of the bvmd. He therefore calls on the politically responsible at federal and state level to improve.
